Surface-emitted longwave radiation NEO, My NASA Data | Thermopile detector for measuring radiating temperature of Earth’s surface Existing inexpensive technology, with tested prototypes. |
Surface temperature and water vapor AERONET, GPS-MET | Handheld IR thermometer for measuring the temperature of the ground or other surfaces and, when pointed at a clear sky, a proxy for total precipitable water vapor in the atmosphere. |
Aerosol optical thickness and water vapor AERONET, NOAA GPS-MET, NEO, My NASA Data | Handheld sun photometer for measuring AOT at two visible
wavelengths (red and green) or total column water vapor, depending on detectors. More than a decade of use in schools and in professional research applications (a GLOBE Program protocol). |

Data from the AERONET site maintained at CCNY in Manhattan are readily available online in near real time. They provide calibration sources for CSRES instruments and comparison data for CSRES measurements. These data include aerosol optical thickness (optical depth) at several wavelengths, and water vapor (based on the ratio between AERONET channels measuring radiation in the near-IR).
